“I’ve been so happy with the SBDC. Ann and her team helped me with my website, logo, ideas, and tips. I was at point where I wasn’t sure where to go, and with the SBDC I felt I could take steps forward.”
Trina began her custom fit welding cap business as a favor for her husband. About 20 years ago, she made a hat for him. To her surprise, he took it to work and sold it in an hour. “We decided I should make more,” recalls Trina. At the time she had young kids, so working from home was an easy transition into her own business.
It took about two years for the business to become full time. Each year had added growth, and even when she had to pause the business for COVID, the customers remained loyal and came back. Her customers like her products because they’re not a standard one-size-fits-all. Trina offers custom fabric and measurements. She keeps the fit and other custom details on file because she has customers come back year after year. She makes between six and eight hats per day.
She recently purchased an embroidery machine since she has had increased requests for embroidery on hats and jackets. In the past she outsourced the embroidery requests, but decided to bring the offering in house. She just completed training on the new machine and plans to hire an employee one or two as she ramps up embroidery services.
