From Passion to Purpose: Growing a Nationwide Movement

In the spring of 2020, as food shortages and supply chain disruptions gripped the nation, Jason Spahr saw an opportunity to make a difference. Recognizing a growing public interest in self-reliant gardening, he launched Survival Garden Seeds (SGS) to provide high-quality heirloom and non-GMO garden seeds, ensuring individuals and communities could grow their own food with confidence.

Jason’s passion for gardening was deeply rooted in his upbringing. Growing up in a family where producing homegrown food was a way of life, he carried that knowledge forward into his professional career. With a degree in e-commerce, he built and successfully sold a thriving retail business with storefronts in Utah and Idaho before setting his sights on a new mission—empowering people to grow their own food.

A Purpose-Driven Company with Nationwide Reach

More than just a seed company, SGS is built on a mission to support agricultural progress, leading to healthier soils, ecosystems, and sustainable food sources. The company goes beyond selling seeds—its website offers hundreds of instructional blogs to educate and empower customers on seed saving, gardening techniques, and self-sufficiency.

What started as a small operation quickly flourished. In just four years, SGS achieved an astounding 1,000% growth, driven primarily by online sales. The momentum continues into 2025, with SGS expanding its reach to 3,600 retail locations nationwide through a partnership with Walmart, the largest retailer in the United States.

“It has been a delight working with Dave at the SBDC through the years. He has always brought great insight and offered fantastic resources that are very helpful in planning and maneuvering market conditions.”
Jason Spahr, Founder, Survival Garden Seeds

Looking Ahead: The Future of SGS

With its rapid expansion and nationwide retail partnerships, Survival Garden Seeds is set to become a household name in gardening and food sustainability. By continuing to educate, innovate, and provide high-quality seeds, SGS is making self-reliant gardening more accessible than ever.
