From Research Project to Global Leader in Avalanche Monitoring

 

The Challenge

Scott Havens founded Snowbound Solutions in 2014 during the final year of his PhD at Boise State University. His work focused on developing an advanced avalanche monitoring system for Highway 21 in Idaho, collaborating with avalanche forecasters for years.

His innovative technology uses low-frequency sound and multiple microphones to detect avalanches 24/7, even during storms and nighttime, providing real-time data to help keep people safe. Clients now include Departments of Transportation, ski resorts, and other avalanche-prone industries.

Despite recognizing the potential impact of his technology, Scott did not go full-time with the business until 2021. That decision marked the beginning of Snowbound Solutions’ journey to becoming one of just three companies worldwide offering this technology.

The Solution

In 2020, Snowbound Solutions sold its first avalanche monitoring system and turned to the Idaho SBDC for help in scaling the business.
With SBDC’s guidance, they:
– Developed a sales and marketing plan
– Revamped their website and advertising
– Updated bookkeeping to improve contract and cash flow management
– Expanded their offerings in 2024, launching a one-of-a-kind application compatible with both their avalanche system and other monitoring solutions

💡 Growth Impact: In just a few years, revenue grew from $25,000 to $725,000 per year, and they hired their first full-time employee in Spring 2024.

The Impact

Snowbound Solutions’ growth continues at a rapid pace. In April 2024, they hired a Senior Software Engineer and plan to expand their team further in 2025. Their client base is also growing, with multiple new contracts secured across the western U.S. and New Zealand.

With the help of SBDC connections, the company is now exploring international expansion. They have engaged with the Department of Commerce to explore export opportunities in Norway, Canada, and India, partnered with APEX to pursue SBIR grant funding, and joined the SBA THRIVE program. Additionally, their SBDC consultant helped them secure an SBA-backed Line of Credit with local lenders to support ongoing growth.

 

Looking ahead, Snowbound Solutions is expanding its technology to monitor other natural hazards such as landslides and rockfalls, furthering its mission to improve safety in high-risk environments.
