Charles and Alison Alpers
Zeppole Baking Company is an award-winning artisan bakery with two cafes that has been providing breads and pastries to the Treasure Valley since 1993. Owners Charles and Alison Alpers purchased Zeppole Baking Company in May 2006, combining a long-held dream of owning their own business with their passion for artisan-style baking.
Over the past four years, Alison and Charles have utilized their expertise in business, as well as in restaurant, country club and hospitality management and operations, to operate Zeppole and maintain the family-owned feel of the business while fulfilling the mission of providing the Treasure Valley with the very best quality artisan baked goods, which Boise Weekly calls “near legendary.”
Although the economic environment has been challenging, Zeppole has recently enjoyed its strongest sales and highest profits in the company’s history. Zeppole has added staff, reduced costs, streamlined production, increased wholesale and catering, and expanded product offerings. The company was named 2010 Small Business of the Year by the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce, and was chosen as Boise’s Best Local Bakery in Boise Weekly’s 2010 Readers’ Choice poll.
“None of this would have been possible without the expertise, assistance, and ongoing support Zeppole has received from the Region III Idaho Small Business Development Center,” said Charles. “Debbie Winkler and Rick Vycital have been a source of experience, objectivity, and good judgment, helping guide us through tough business issues and the worst economic environment in our history.”
“When we first consulted the ISBDC, we were in doubt as to whether or not the firm would be able to continue operation,” he added. “The fact that Zeppole is now thriving is a testament to the expertise and services provided by the Idaho SBDC.”
