Timberline Chainsaw Sharpener is the case study of a successful exporting company. Located in Idaho Falls, Timberline manufactures and markets a unique patented chainsaw sharpener. According to owner Phil Krantz, “It’s fast, easy, accurate and is considered by most people who have tried it to be the ultimate chainsaw sharpener.” At the prestigious National Hardware Show held in Las Vegas in 2011, Timberline received the Retailers’ Choice Awards – Award of Distinction.
Within a year after initiating sales, the sharpeners were being shipped to over 20 countries.
Timberline formally launched in 2009. After acquiring the original technology and patent, Phil contacted the Idaho Falls Small Business Development Center (SBDC), to help develop a business and marketing plan. He completed all the basic business processes, from finalizing product development to acquiring funding, branding and packaging, marketing, manufacturing, and establishing distribution channels to turn the product into a successful venture.
The company was launched on a minimal investment of $134,000. Within a year after initiating sales, the sharpeners were being shipped to over 20 countries. Sales in 2013 are at $500,000 and are on track to reach $1 million.
